Curated by Debra Barrera

galleryHOMELAND Houston is proud to present Daytime Television curated by Debra Barrera as our Grand Opening Show. Daytime Television brings together five young Houston artists who are currently studying at both Rice University and the University of Houston. These five artists were chosen for their exceptional talent and ability to move their work above and beyond the walls of academia. Daytime Television aims to foster support and exposure for these local young artists, not only from two of the city’s major university art programs but also the art community at large.

Daytime Television: “television before the watershed, and therefore subject to censorship”. The definition perfectly describes the feeling of being a young artist in college: a period before the prime time of an established art career and subject to constant critiques from teachers and peers. Fresh eyes and ideas draws the viewers to these young artists and how they similarly approached art making. The five artists have an uncanny ability to work from benign subject matter, safe for mass consumption, and create work that is surprising, avant-garde, and complex. Daytime Television by definition is safe for viewing by every age bracket but actual daytime TV shows touch on the vastness of daily life from saccharine reruns of The Brady Bunch to the grittiness of Teen Mom. These young and outstanding artists bring forth truly interesting and inspiring works that reveal what can come out of the humdrum of college life.
