Thursday, May 20th

Lauded by Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post as a filmmaker responsible for, “some of the liveliest work on the microcinema circuit, [where] film, video art, and music collide with edgy, confrontational, unpredictable and often exuberant intensity”, Vanessa Renwick is coming to Berlin! On May 20th, Renwick will be presenting a select screening of her short works at Arsenal in collaboration with The EAST/WEST Project. Her iconoclastic work reflects an interest in place, relationships between bodies and landscapes, and all sorts of borders. Working in experimental and poetic documentary forms, she produces films, videos and installations that explore the possibility of hope in contemporary society.
CROWDOG (1984/98) is about the American Indian movement. Her “Portrait Series” (2005-09) is dedicated to the efforts toward independence in the Cascadia region of the American Northwest and based on music from the area. BRITTON, SOUTH DAKOTA (2003) is a structural found footage piece with 60-year-old portraits of the town’s children. The triple projection, HOPE AND PREY (2006), deals with hunting and being hunted in the wilderness.
The screening will include:

Portrait #2: Trojan 2006 5 min

For “Shadow + Sunlight” the EAST/WEST Project presents a Berlin/West Coast Spectacular of work by a new generation of artists raised in a world colored by counter-cultural ideals of the 60’s and esoteric, transcendental visuals from the American Symbolist and Visionary artistic movements of the early 20th century. Encompassing painting, photography, sculpture and drawing, it is an exhibition of moments where micro-emotional experiences open the door to a new and infinite sense of self in the world; a walk through the city becomes a cartographic mandala charting intimate epiphanies, hypercolor crystals trap the suggestion of a sacred geometry, tiny hillsides sprout on the backs of gnarled mushrooms and young men and women commune with one another in a woodland utopia.
