SOUTHERN / PACIFIC
The steel tracks of the Southern Pacific Rail Company once stretched through the Pacific Northwest, down the West Coast and across Texas. These train lines connected people, ideas, and visions of expansion.
Southern Pacific is a series of three individually curated shows connecting artist of Portland Oregon, Houston and Marfa Texas. Slated for spring of 2011, Southern Pacific will act as an import export project expanding on the works of just over a dozen artists.
Through these exhibitions the artists will be working with each other and these diverse communities to create new works and new conversations. Each artist will be encouraged to not only create new work for this project but to actively participate in community events, discussions and the residency program. With the main exhibitions creating the foundation, film screenings, panel discussions, performances, and workshops will be happening throughout the duration of the show. Southern Pacific will not only capture the energy of these practices but also act as a living exhibition.
Mission:
Southern Pacific is the first installment of the Outpost, a cultural exchange project through galleryHOMELAND. Together The Outpost and Southern Pacific are focused on creating a stronger dialogue and cultural exchange for artists to build upon individually and collaboratively. Through residencies, traveling exhibitions, and events, Southern Pacific will bring exposure and creative involvement within Portland, Houston, Marfa, and beyond.
